Research ahead of the 2024 election showed widespread apathy among young people, particularly young people of color. Many prospective first time voters expressed skepticism that voting in a general election could improve their lives — they felt their votes were inconsequential, especially at the federal level.
As part of the South’s Got Now | Decidimos campaign (SPLC’s core voter mobilization campaign in the South), we developed a comic series to showcase the importance of civic engagement and to convince new voters that the outcomes of elections have lasting impacts on their individual lives. For this comic, we chose to focus on the lasting legacy of the civil rights movement in accessing the right to vote, as well as the many things at stake for young people in the South.
